Why and When is a Notarized Translation Required
Notarized translation is required in many situations and for a variety of documents and certificates. Firstly, there are many documents for which the authorities will not accept a regular translation, such as marriage certificates, death certificates, wills, and so on. There are clear laws that mandate notarization for these documents. Additionally, there are documents intended for specific institutions, such as courts in Israel and abroad, where absolute accuracy of the translation is crucial, and therefore a notarized translation may be required. It is important to note that sometimes an apostille stamp is also required, which our office provides for the translation of documents between countries that are signatories to the Apostille Convention when needed.
However, it is important to emphasize that not every legal or official document always requires notarization or an apostille. Sometimes a regular or professional translation is sufficient, and it is essential to verify this—especially if dealing with lengthy legal documents. As we will explain below, law firms charge for notarized translations based on their length. You can calculate the cost of notarized translation on your own or with the help of our translation cost calculator. It would be a costly and unnecessary expense to order a notarized translation for a lengthy court ruling that only requires a professional translation.
What is the Cost of a Notarized Translation?
Many people who contact our office ask us how much a notarized translation costs. The answer is clear: there is a uniform and binding rate set by the Ministry of Justice for all notarial services (which are numerous), including the certification of the accuracy of translations of various documents. These rates may change from year to year, and in 2024 the rates are as follows: NIS 236 up to the first hundred words in the translation, NIS 186 for every additional hundred words or part of them, up to the first thousand words in the document, and NIS 93 for every hundred words or part of them beyond the first thousand words. This price does not include VAT (17%).
